배경훈 부총리 겸 과학기술정보통신부 장관이 현존하는 가장 발전된 인공지능(AI) 모델인 ‘프런티어 AI’ 개발에 도전해야 한다고 밝혔다. AI 모델 개발 경험과 인프라가 어느 정도 갖춰진 만큼 더 공격적인 투자로 국가 경쟁력을 높여야 한다는 것이다.

배 부총리는 29일 서울 중구 서울중앙우체국에서 정부 출범 1년 기자간담회를 열고 과기정통부의 가장 큰 성과로 'AI 고속도로' 인프라 구축이 시작됐다는 점을 꼽았다. 그는 “첨단 그래픽처리장치(GPU) 26만 장 확보 계획이 차질 없이 진행되고 있고, GPU가 부족해 연구 성과를 내기 어렵다는 얘기는 더 이상 안 나오는 것 같다”며 “기업과 투자 논의 과정에서 당초 예상보다 더 많은 GPU 확보가 가능할 것”이라고 말했다. 장기적으로는 국내 AI 반도체 기업의 신경망처리장치(NPU)를 더 많이 활용하겠다고도 강조했다.

배 부총리는 “미국 스탠퍼드대 AI평가지수에서 국산 AI 모델이 호평을 받으며 우리나라 경쟁력이 미국, 중국에 이어 3위로 인정받았다”고 소개하면서도 세계 순위 경쟁이 목표는 아니라고 강조했다. 그는 “1차 전략은 대한민국의 강점인 제조산업 분야 특화 모델을 만들고 AI 전환 사례를 만들어 차별화해야 한다”고 말했다.

독자 AI 파운데이션 모델 프로젝트로 기초체력이 쌓인 만큼, 더 과감한 투자로 구글 제미나이, 오픈AI 챗GPT를 넘는 모델에 도전을 시작해야 한다고도 독려했다. 향후 약 5년 내로 예상되는 일반인공지능(AGI) 등장에 대비하기 위해서도 AI 주권을 강화해야 한다는 이유다.
